Kat Kalo Part I

Day 1 - 25

About Kat Kalo

Katerina Kalogeraki was born in Greece but has lived in the UK since the early 1980’s.

Her work is mainly photographic, although in the last few years she specialised in using reminiscence with adults who suffer from memory loss and dementia. Images, taken by participants, are used in order to create personal life history books.

A large part of her photography work is autobiographical involving participatory projects across generations. Family history, collective memory and oral histories are some of the themes she examines.

She has exhibited in venues such as the Museum of London and the South Bank as well as cultural institutions in several European cities. Her work is in private collections in cities across Greece, in New York, Berlin, Bern, London and Paris.

She has won several photographic awards such as the Millennium Awards in UK, the London Hellenic Society Award, an AG Leventis Foundation Award and several others in the UK, Switzerland and Greece.

She lives and works from London on commissioned photography, mixing reportage and experimental artistic work. She teaches photography and related subjects to young adults, able and disabled young people and mature adults.

Parts of her work can be
seen here.

Interview With Kat Kalo

21st April 2020

Q: What has changed for you in the last week?
I am working on a lot of different projects but I also seem to communicate online with a lot of people I wouldn’t have normally communicated as frequently as I am.

What are you thinking about doing next?
Working on a photographic project involving lots of different people on it. Learning new teaching platforms in order to carry on with my classes.

Q: Do you relish doing things that you have never done before?
I love doing new things but I am also a creature of habit. Sometimes new things, involve putting in a lot of hours that leave me quite broke and I really can’t afford them.

Q: Do you prefer to take on large or small projects?
I usually choose large projects for my own artistic work but I welcome any projects if they are challenging and interesting, especially if they pay.

Q: How do you feel when you see all the negativity about COVID19?
I think a lot of good points are missed out. Putting the tragic deaths to one side, I see a lot of positive things that have come out in the last few weeks. Environment is better off, personal relationships, community engagement and empathy towards other people, are a few of the things that benefited us all.

Q: How do you feel about being told to stay home?
It’s done me and the rest of my family, a great deal of good. I normally travel a lot and spend a lot of time away from home. I wish, in the long run, it will change things for the better.

Q: How do you feel about the Governments narrative on COVID19?
I am heavily involved with two other countries and constantly watch news from both of them plus the UK. Unfortunately I trust our government the least….not that other governments are great but at least they’ve acted quicker and have handled things much better than UK. The PM falling ill, has made matters worse and distracted from what was really happening. Ι hope that once this is over, more consideration and pay rises will be given out to all those who have saved thousands not to mention the invisible shop workers, cleaners and everybody else who’s kept our lives going.
